Playa Las Bocas is a kind of beach suburb of Puerto Padre and serves as a pied-à-terre for its citizens and a very calma playa for travellers in the know and on the cheap. Clean and modest casas with permits can be rented right by its small beach not quite on the open sea. You'll find that next door at Las Llanitas (longer and more inviting, without casas). LOCATION At the mouth of the bay of Chaparra, hence its name (Bocas=mouths). Access on foot via Puerto Padre. By car from Puerto Padre, through Delicias, Jesus Menendez (Chaparra), turn left north at the rail line in Lora then past La Herradura, and towards the west along the coast past Punto Uvero, Las Llanitas and you're here. Hardy types could consider biking to Jesus Menendez (Chaparra) to visit this interesting colonial town which was the economic centre of the area, with its sugar mill the largest in the East. La Boca is popular during el verano (summer) for the population of Puerto Padre and those travellers who have kept the secret. Playa Las Llanitas (photo pano on top of page) is much longer (some snacks and bars) and the site of a hotel and training centre of the Minint (Ministry of the Interior).

HEED THE HINTS IN THIS FINE PRINT
::: Overbooking having become too prevalent, make sure that in your first email or phone call you specify that you want to book a room in that particular casa and please insist on this when you reconfirm — on arrival in Cuba. As late as it may seem, it allows them a chance to rebook. ::: Children under the age of 16 may share a bedroom with adults for free.
